Welcome

  • Welcome to The Sparrow's Nest! My name is Mrs. Wilt. I am a Christian, saved by grace. Aside from being a wife and mommy, I enjoy reading, drinking coffee and hot tea, listening to classical music, gardening, sewing, and working on our 1933 home. So, pour yourself a cuppa and let's chat!

NOTE: This site's comments are moderated by a busy mommy, so if yours doesn't show up right away, have no fear! As soon as Johnathan takes his nap and Christopher settles down with a book I'll get them online- I promise! :o)

Herald the Christmas Season!

MangerDear Friends,

We returned home from Thanksgiving with my parents today with Christmas music playing in the van...our first "tradition" of the holiday season. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing our family traditions, recipes, and thoughts with you here at the Nest.

Next Monday, I will be releasing my new book In Good Season: Winter, followed in 2 weeks by Creative Children's Rooms on a Budget.

Here is a sneak peek of one of my favorite holiday activities as a family: making peppermint bark.

To make peppermint bark, you will need:

1 bag white chocolate chips
a handful of peppermints or 2-3 candy canes

Melt the white chocolate chips over low heat until smooth. Spread wax paper on a cookie sheet or brownie pan. Spread white chocolate on wax paper with a spatula. To be fancy, you can swirl in a bit of red food coloring, but don't swirl too much or you will end up with pink bark! :o) Allow children to crush peppermints or candy canes with a mallet. Sprinkle peppermint on top and put in refrigerator until cool and hardened. Pull candy from fridge and carefully break up into pieces. This is a great gift for neighbors or friends, and looks beautiful in a clear box tied with ribbon or perhaps a jingle bell or pinecone for decoration. Yum!

Make sure to check back often for more Christmas ideas! Have a blessed Advent season! :o)

In His joy, Mrs. Wilt

Happy to have you back, Mrs. Wilt. :)

The peppermint bark sounds so good, and nice and easy too! I like to make candy at Christmas time for gifts, and this may end up on my gift plates! =)

I make this every year for my family and friends. You are so right, it makes a beautiful presentation, not to mention it tastes "oh so yummy!!"

Mrs.Wilt, thank you for the yummy recipe on making pepermint bark.
I can not wait to make this with my child for my family and I to enjoy eating.

What a great idea! It doesn't look hard at all to make. Thank you for this!

Happy Advent to you too!

If you'd still like to help me out as a guest blogger, i'd love to have you at advent for evangelicals! :)

Looking forward to your winter ebook. The fall one was great!

This is something I'm going to have to try. Sounds yummy.

My SIL made something similar to this several years ago and *I* absolutely love it. She used little peppermint flavored "rocks" (don't know what else to call them) that are colored red and green. That stuff is ADDICTIVE! :-) I've made it myself several times since then.
